Jennifer Garner, who was born and raised within Charleston West Virginia, on April 17, 1973 was born in Houston, Texas. William John Garner served as an engineer at Union Carbide. Patricia Ann was a teacher at the local university. In the hopes of following the footsteps of her father, she graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. Since she wanted to be an actress she went on a trip to New York. When she was not appearing in Broadway shows, she worked as a waitress. Garner was a guest star in the television series "Felicity." (It it was in this series when she met her first husband, Scott Foley.) Garner was given her first major part with "13 going on thirty" which was a romantic comedy which was highly acclaimed. Garner played a teenage girl trapped inside the adult body. Garner chose Gary Winick to direct the film, and they kept looking for new films together up until the time of his death in 2011. Garner, who was designated as an ambassador for artists with Save the Children U.S.A. during 2009, had an important role within the organization. This includes the advancement of the importance of nutrition, literacy and early education. Garner, who has served as a member of the board since 2014, is an advocate of early learning. As a member of the Early Steps to School Success (EASS) program's ambassador team Garner regularly visits families to coach them on ways to encourage their young children to achieve.
